XX XY

Re-defining the stereotype. A publication exploring links between the media and the stereotypical man/woman.

Within magazines there is a constant feed of 'image'. The idealistic beauty, the character traits, the colour palette, the font choice... It is already set out. You can tell immediately what an advert’s intended gender audience is. I am interested in exposing whether all these preconceptions are fed into our thinking subconsciously and whether there are little things that are engrained into our culture that we miss, that keep us unequal as genders.

Experimentation File // Collection of Letterpress and Magazine Cutouts
Japanese stab-stitch bound. Contradictory text highlights the perception of women in society being indecisive and the push towards what is expected of them.
XX XY // Digitally Printed Fabric Publication
Two publications that reappropriate the form of magazines. Printed on juxtaposing materials, playing on idea of opposites and stereotypical gender traits, that men are strong and women are the fairer sex. Specific bindings chosen to highlight opposite gender stereotype.

Left: XX (female) - printed onto cotton canvas fabric. Japanese bind stitch using thick whte cotton cord.
Right: XY (male) - printed onto cotton voile fabric. Japanese bind stitch using 0.6mm copper wire.
Delicate copper wire against soft cotton voile, and strong robust cotton cord against a heavy cotton canvas. Men can be gentle and women can be strong.
