The Undiscovered Country...

A collective series of paper folds inspired by the poem 'Dante’s Inferno'. Answering live project brief set by ISTD.

Kingdom of the Truly Dead is a collective series of nine paper folds inspired by the poem 'Dante’s Inferno', by Dante Alighieri. The poem is an allegory telling of the journey of Dante through Hell, with its depiction as nine circles of suffering, located within the Earth. Relating to death and the afterlife, each level within the series is made with corresponding paper choices and quotes to evoke a feeling, and show the message of each title through appropriate materials. Quotes throughout series printed using letterpress. Specialist paper selection from G.F Smith.
To view the work appropriately, each piece of the series needs to be set up in a circular formation. Each card is numbered one to nine, with the numbers printed in the top right hand corner of the A5 design. Set up the first card, and in a clockwise motion set up the remaining cards into a circle. This chosen structure showcases the best sight of the work, and mirrors the concentric gradual wickedness of Hell depicted in the work of Dante’s Inferno.
